A fence remains around the circle on Monument Avenue where the six-story monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee once stood. The statue was removed in September, and the pedestal was cleared away late last month. This week, City Council authorized Mayor Levar M. Stoney to accept the statue, pedestal and the land from the state. They are to be turned over to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Jackson Ward, along with other city-owned Confederate monuments.

VCU homecoming royalty // Lawrence Cooper and Amy Chong are all smiles after they were presented as the Virginia Commonwealth University 2015 Homecoming King and Queen last Friday at the Rams’ game against Prairie View A&M University at the Siegel Center. The Rams trounced the Panthers 75-50. Last weekend’s homecoming festivities at VCU included a parade, alumni and student leader networking brunch, a step show and a VCU women’s basketball game won by the Lady Rams, 73-42, over Coppin State University.

Mandala: Sacred art/Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in India create a sand mandala at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts recently to share Tibet’s sacred visual and performing arts with area audiences. The monks’ work, created over four days, was completed in conjunction with the VMFA’s new exhibit, “Awaken: A Tibetan Buddhist Journey Toward Enlightenment,” that features roughly 100 historical and contemporary objects highlighting the role of art in Tibetan Buddhist culture and religious practices. The event, held at Mount Olivet Church in Church Hill, brought together numerous organizations, businesses, movement organizers and area residents over food, music, dance, health and community engagement. Runners take off during the inaugural RUN RICHMOND 16.19 that started and ended at Kanawha Plaza in Downtown Richmond on Saturday, Sept. 17. The run was organized by actor and model Djimon Hounsou’s foundation in collaboration with The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia and Sports Backers. The run shines a light on the achievements of the Black community over the past 400 plus years with the designated courses of 16.19 km and 6.19 miles. As the runners proceed on the course they pass various historical Black sites throughout the city.

Brandon was among a select group of entrepreneurs ages 6 to 17 participating in last Saturday’s inaugural Richmond Children’s Business Fair at the Science Museum of Virginia. The event, sponsored by Acton Academy and Acton School of Business, helped youngsters develop a product or service, create a brand, build a marketing strategy and then open for customers at a one-day marketplace. Richmond area youngsters enjoyed the new equipment during a May 20 dedication ceremony for the Markiya Dickson Imagination Zone playground in Fonticello Park. The play area commemorates the life of Markiya who was 9 years-old when she was killed by gunfire that erupted in the park four years ago. Her parents, Ciara Dickson and Mark Whitfield Sr., are pleased with the playground, yet admit that their daughter’s death remains painful. “We’ll never get past it or get over it, so we’re living through it,” said her mother. “We’re learning how to cope with it.”

Cityscape // A family walks on the frozen edge of the James River on Sunday, evidence of the frigid conditions that gripped the city over the past two weeks. The first week in January saw temperatures average 17.8 degrees, the coldest for that week since the National Weather Service began taking measurements in Richmond at least 100 years ago. It also broke the average temperature record for the week of 21.1 degrees set in 1918. Good news: Richmond will enjoy ice-melting temperatures this week, with temperatures climbing into the 60s on Friday. The high is expected to be in the 50s Saturday for Gov.-elect Ralph S. Northam’s inauguration before plunging again to the 30s on Sunday and Monday.

A sign of support or a statement? This homemade “Black Lives Matter” banner was spotted on a brick wall in front of a Monument Avenue residence near Allen Avenue, the intersection where the huge statue to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee stands on a traffic circle. The area around the statue has been the epicenter of protests over racial injustice and police brutality since May. Signs like this one and logos with BLM have become commonplace on businesses and other buildings in and near Downtown and the circle following an early spate of window-smashing, fires and looting. The signs often were posted as plea for anyone bent on destruction to spare a structure.

As Black History Month gets underway, this dramatic mural provides an artistic celebration of the people and events who represent protest, progress and achievement. Location: 504 W. Broad St. in Downtown. Richmond artists Ed Trask and Jason Ford created the mural, called “Voices of Perseverance,” as part of the Mending Walls RVA initiative. Launched by muralist Hamilton Glass, Mending Walls aims to bring together artists to develop projects that spark empathy and dialogue. Mr. Glass came up with the idea during the upheaval over racial justice and police misconduct that led to the removal of most of the city’s Confederate statues.

Year-old Deilani Bland-Murph holds on to the hands of her mother, Tyshell Bland, right, and that of a Richmond SPCA volunteer at last Saturday’s 20th Annual Dog Jog and 5k to benefit the pets in the care of the local SPCA. People and their pets came from all over the region to participate in the event held at the SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Road near The Diamond. The day was packed with games and activities for people of all ages. Deilani’s mom and the volunteer helped her on the “Little Paws” Fund Run for the youngest of all. The day kicked off with a 5K run/walk for people, followed by a leisurely mile-long Dog Jog for people and their dogs.

City becomes dumping ground again // Just weeks after a community cleanup, these alleys in Highland Park have been re-trashed. Unwanted mattresses now fill part of the alley in the 3300 block of Utah Place. A pile of tires has been dumped in the 3200 block of Fifth Avenue. After hearing from angry constituents, Richmond City Councilwoman Ellen F. Robertson is blaming the city administration’s indifference. “When we began cleaning alleys, we forcefully warned that unless the city changed its mode of operations in managing bulk trash, dumping and accumulated trash, the cycle would start all over,” the 6th District councilwoman stated in a Dec. 30 email to residents.
