Life as we know it has changed since the coronavirus pandemic. We took for granted the grand outdoor festivals, the events along the waterfront and the public ceremonies that drew thousands of people. Now, under Gov. Ralph S. Northam’s executive order to stay at home and away from groups, those areas are largely empty as people try to prevent the spread of the potentially fatal disease. These Free Press photos show the “before” and “after” impact of coronavirus on our city.

Signs of spring abound, from robins to daffodils to baseball. Here, Nutzy, the mascot of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, climbs the steps of The Diamond baseball stadium to kick off the team’s first event of its 11th season — a block party last Saturday at the stadium on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. Nutzy’s Block Party included live music, dancing, local vendors and ballpark tours. It was the first opportunity for fans to buy game tickets before the season home opener on Thursday, April 16, against the Bowie Baysox of Maryland. The Richmond Flying Squirrels are the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

According to the regional Girl Scouts organization, the cookie program teaches youth members key life skills as they raise money to support the operation and programming that serves 12,000 children and teens in 36 cities and counties. “When you buy cookies, you are helping to power beneficial experiences for girls and build the next generation of female entrepreneurs,” stated Molly T. Fuller, chief executive officer of the regional Girl Scouts group.

A real feast/ Hundreds of people are in crab heaven at the all-you-can-eat Crab Feast & Fish Fry held last Saturday by the Men of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at Peter Paul Development Center in the East End. People check out a 28-foot model of an envisioned park that would span the James River. The Richmond BridgePark Foundation unveiled the model last Thursday at a Broad Street venue. The area would include trees to help make it feel more like a park. As yet there is no funding for BridgePark, which would cost millions of dollars to create. The proposal was inspired by a similar walking bridge, the High Line, in New York City. One proposal calls for BridgePark to use the still visible piers of a bridge that was toppled in a past flood. The proposed bridge would link Kanawha Plaza in Downtown to the Manchester Climbing Wall in South Side and fit between the Manchester Bridge that links 9th Street to South Side and the new pedestrian T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge that connects Brown’s Island on the north bank of the James River to Manchester on the south bank of the river. (Regina H. Boone/Richmond Free Press )

The event, held at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in the East End, offered health screenings, information and consultations with health professionals. It was the 11th year for the community event put on by VCU students with the assistance of physicians and community organizations. Second Chances provides mental health counseling for youths and adults, case management and links to other community resources.

Richmonders of all ages turned out last Wednesday to remember and honor Arthur Ashe, the late Richmond tennis great who would have turned 74 on July 10. The event, held at Battery Park in North Side, featured free tennis lessons for youngsters, sponsored by the Richmond Tennis Association. Another highlight was the unveiling of murals dedicated to the tennis champion at the entryways and inside a pedestrian tunnel that links the park’s basketball and tennis courts. The murals were the project of Sir James Thornhill and a large group of community volunteers.

Making history // Gov. Terry McAuliffe gives Richmond Delegate Delores L. McQuinn his pen Wednesday after signing a history-making bill into law that she patroned through the General Assembly. The new law ensures that 19th-century graves, monuments and markers of African-Americans will get the same state support as the burial sites of Confederate soldiers who fought to keep them enslaved. The governor also signed a second bill Richmond Delegate Jennifer L. McClellan ushered through the legislature that clears the way for the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities to preserve and tell the story of sites in the state linked to enslaved people. Among those taking part in the signing ceremony are, from left, Richmond Delegate Betsy B. Carr; Powhatan Delegate R. Lee Ware; Delegate McQuinn; Fairfax Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn; Petersburg Delegate Lashrecse D.
