Work crews were on the job earlier this month in preparation for the new GRTC bus transfer station in Downtown Richmond. The new transfer site was once a parking lot at 8th and Clay streets across from the John Marshall Courts Building and the vacated Public Safety Building. The transfer station will replace an older one that was along 9th Street between Marshall and Leigh streets. According to GRTC’s social media, plans are to have the new site serve more routes in order to simplify transfers. Amenities, technologies and lighting will be upgraded at the station.

A new sign now sits on the grassy circle at Monument and Allen avenues where the Robert E. Lee statue sits. The original sign informally renaming the circle for Marcus-David Peters, a 24-year-old high school biology teacher who was shot and killed by Richmond Police officer in 2018 during what has been described as a mental crisis, was cut down by an unknown person or people around Aug. 16. State officials and law enforcement said at the time there was no official order for its removal. The new sign was put in place Aug. 30.

Rallying to save Belmead// An intent crowd listens as volunteer Rodney Jackson rallies support last Saturday to keep the Pennsylvania-based Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament from selling their 2,265-acre Belmead property in Powhatan County. The SBS once operated two Catholic boarding schools for African-American students on the site. Mr. Jackson stands in front of the Belmead mansion, the former home of St. Emma Military Academy for Boys. The other school was St. Francis de Sales School for Girls. About 200 people attended the rally, but the prospects are regarded as slim that the SBS leadership will change course. Already, the SBS essentially has dissolved the nonprofit FrancisEmma Inc. that managed the property for the Catholic order of nuns for the past 12 years.

Location: 411 Commerce Road. The new truck was put into service during the “housing ceremony.” It is one of nine the city Fire Department has ordered since 2012 under a replacement program initiated under former Mayor Dwight C. Jones. This is the first new truck to arrive since April 2016. The city’s goal is to replace over time the trucks that the city’s 19 engine companies deploy to reduce the cost of keeping outdated equipment in service.

Jane Cooper Johnson (formerly Daisy Jane Cooper) stands in front of Richmond’s newest sculpture “Strides” during its unveiling at the corner of Libbie and Patterson Avenues on Jan. 30. The statue was commissioned by Bon Secours and Thalhimer Realty Partners, and designed by local artists Matt Lively and Tim Harper to commemorate the racial integration of Westhampton School at the corner of Libbie and Patterson. The inscription on the statue behind her reads: “On September 5, 1961 Daisy Jane Cooper was the first African American Student to integrate Richmond City’s Westhampton Junior High School under a U.S. Desegregation Court Order. The following year, September 1962, she was the first African American student to integrate Thomas Jefferson High School.”

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Walker! Richmond area residents took time recently to remember pioneering Richmond businesswoman Maggie L. Walker in honor of what would have been her 157th birthday on July 15. While she is best known as the first Black woman to found and serve as president of a bank in the United States, she also was a civil rights and voting rights advocate, newspaper publisher, store owner and politician and all around community leader. Mrs. Walker was a founding member of the Richmond Branch NAACP; helped lead a boycott of the racially segregated Richmond trolley system; was the first Black woman to run for statewide office in 1921 in seeking to become state superintendent of public education; and was grand secretary of the Order of St. Luke, leading the fraternal society in opening a department store, producing a newspaper and creating the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank.

On Tuesday, community volunteers Tracie Tucker, left, and Barbara Burton, the parent of two RPS graduates, participated in a “PPE Party Packing” effort at the Arthur Ashe Jr. Athletic Center next to The Diamond to pack kits of personal protective equipment, or PPE, for students. Also joining in the effort were RPS teachers and staff and Richmond social workers and employees from the Office of Community Engagement. Each kit contains hand sanitizer, a mask, a water bottle, a thermometer and a magnet printed in both English and Spanish with the symptoms to check for during the pandemic. The group hoped to pack at least 25,000 PPE kits that will be given to students on the opening day. Gov. Northam and the state health commissioner have issued public health orders for all Virginia students in kindergarten through 12th grade to wear masks inside schools. The goal is for students to stay healthy and avoid the coronavirus.

This new billboard on Oliver Hill Way near the Richmond Justice Center spells out key demands protesters in the city have been pressing for weeks. So far, Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Colette W. McEachin, who works several blocks west in the John Marshall Courts Building, has resisted the pressure to drop the criminal charges against the more than 300 demonstrators who have been arrested since late May. Mrs. McEachin has promised only that her office would review each case and that those arrested between May 30 and June 1 solely for violating a city curfew order would not face jail time. According to the Virginia Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, an undetermined number of people arrested during demonstrations are being held in jail without bond and might not have their preliminary hearings for another month or two. The billboard is the work of a coalition called DTCRVA, which stands for Drop the Charges RVA.

Jones, pastors of First Baptist Church of South Richmond, get a closer look at the new bronze sculpture “Hope Empowered by the Truth” with its creator, local artist Kathleen Lowry. The 150-pound sculpture was unveiled at the Decatur Street church on Monday, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, during a ceremony viewed online by more than 200 people. Ms. Lowry donated the piece to the church after attending the socially distanced kickoff last September of First Baptist’s yearlong 200th anniversary celebration. She said the church seemed like the perfect home for the sculpture. “It is recognition of the work you do every day to promote peace in our country,” she said during Monday’s event. “Martin Luther King knew what would be necessary — faith, hopefulness, truth-telling, courage, resilience, kindness and forgiveness. And that is what you are doing and being in the struggle for equality and peace. It is an extremely tall order.” Members of the congregation will be able to see the artwork once the church reopens for in-person worship service. The church has held virtual services because of the pandemic.
