The yearly event, sponsored by the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Richmond and Vicinity, is a part of a Richmond tradition celebrating the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation that freed enslaved persons in the Confederate states, including those in Virginia. Richmond was once a major marketplace for the buying and selling of enslaved persons. The speakers and the music moved many in the audience.

Monroe Park is once again open to the public following the biggest facelift in its 167-year history as a public green space. The centerpiece of the park is the Checkers House, which has been remodeled to provide room for a coffee shop, modern restrooms and space for city and Virginia Commonwealth University police officers. “Look Back, Focus Forward” was the theme for the Elegba Folklore Society’s Juneteenth “2022 Freedom Celebration” event at Richmond’s African Burial Ground in Shockoe Bottom on June 26. Antoinette Rogers is staying put at her North Side home with her 161⁄2-year-old Maltese mix dog, Toby. She takes him out for walks and fresh air. The adjunct education professor at the University of Richmond teaches one weekly online class now from the comfort of home. “I know I thrive in a face-to-face setting,” she said, while admitting that online teaching “takes a little more effort.” The pandemic, she said, has brought a pause to most everyone’s life. The silver lining? “I think God gave us some time to step back, assess some things and take stock of our lives.”
