A front-end loader scoops out the sediment choking the Haxall Canal in Downtown, whose waters once powered an electric plant. The work to dredge the canal from Brown’s Island to 12th Street began Jan. 15 and is expected to take four months, according to the city Department of Public Utilities, which is managing the job. Richmond Department of Public Works crews have been busy since Feb. 25 replacing street signs along U.S. 1 formerly named for Confederate Jefferson Davis with the new name, Richmond Highway. City Council voted last summer to change its name. Officials said it will take about a month to replace about 98 signs. The cost: $45,000.

This barrier now detours traffic from Fairmount Avenue, one block from the avenue’s intersection with 25th Street, Nine Mile Road and S Street. There, heavy equipment is digging up asphalt to create a new roundabout that will replace traffic lights at the busy intersection. Simons Contracting was awarded a $784,500 contract for the work that will disrupt traffic for three months. Total project cost: $1.2 million.

Organizers want a reform of the juvenile justice system that often incarcerates youths for minor infractions at a high cost to young people and the state. Marchers wore T-shirts and held signs, including a lighted sign with the message, “Prisons Don’t Work.” The march was organized by Mark Strandquist and Trey Hartt of Performance Statistics, a collaboration of Richmond area artists and legal advocates that is a part of the statewide RISE for Youth Coalition for juvenile justice reform.

Socks for others: Home-schooled students who take online classes through Virginia Virtual Academy decorate a large Christmas stocking last Friday at the Richmond Public Library Main Branch in Downtown. Honoring the spirit of the season, the youngsters stuffed the decorated stocking with new socks of all sizes. The giant stocking then was donated to St. Joseph’s Villa to help people in need. Ashley Williams, with her dog, Sebastian, a pit bull-spaniel mix, on the front porch of her East End home, is happy to stay in during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her family, she says, has experienced health scares in recent weeks, both related and unrelated to the coronavirus. “I have always valued family and friends, yet the communication with loved ones is even more cherished than before,” said the founder of BareSOUL Yoga. The experience also has shifted how she connects with people and the community — through online offerings and resources. The silver lining? “I am able to appreciate, explore and enjoy my home.”

Jace Miles celebrates his victory in the 2nd Annual Bright Minds RVA Chess Tournament at the awards presentation Friday night at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. The 13-year-old Henderson Middle School student, the son of Michael and Otesa Miles, received a trophy and $400 for his first place showing in the four-round competition involving 10 youths. Jace started playing chess in an afternoon elementary school program. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, he further developed his chess skills by playing online with a cousin who lives in New York. In between, he continued to play the game.

Cityscape // This new 124-ton crane stands tall at the Richmond Marine Terminal, making it easier to load and unload cargo from ships docked at the James River port off Commerce Road in South Side. The crane, which reaches about 24 stories, cost $4.2 million and is part of the $17 million being invested in the port by the Virginia Port Authority, the independent agency leasing and operating the city’s port for the next 40 years.

View of former Philip Morris tobacco plant that Richmond Public Schools and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College hope to turn into a new technical school for students to train in fields ranging from auto mechanics to construction and advanced manufacturing. Altria donated the vacant plant at 2325 Maury St. three years ago to RPS, which could not afford the potential $40 million renovation cost. Reynolds is looking to gain state support for the project.

This stylish and decorative streetlight, set against the backdrop of the Richmond skyline, stands in Kanawha Plaza, the city park at 8th and Canal streets in Downtown. The look is part of a $2.9 million makeover completed in 2016 for the park, which previously was an informal shelter for the homeless. The previous traditional globe streetlights often were broken. This is the new look of Richmond’s Farmers’ Market on 17th Street in Shockoe Bottom. Most of the green-topped sheds, fixtures since 1986, are gone, creating a more open space for public events. The remaining sheds allow the 236-year-old market to remain in operation. The shed removal, which cost about $88,000, is the first step in a planned $2.5 million facelift for the market, including the installation of promenades and new landscaping. This photo was taken a few days before the start of the UCI Road World Championships.

Cityscape // The group raised $11,880 — the poverty line for a single person — to cover the cost of the playground maps through its inaugural “Little Black Dress Initiative.” Members wore the same black dress for a week to get a little experience in the lack of choices poor people face. Other elementary schools slated to get the educational maps include Blackwell, Carver, Fairfield Court, Greene and Overby-Sheppard, said Joanne Frye, Junior League president. “These maps represent community, learning and our investment in the next generation.”

Monroe Park is once again open to the public following the biggest facelift in its 167-year history as a public green space. The centerpiece of the park is the Checkers House, which has been remodeled to provide room for a coffee shop, modern restrooms and space for city and Virginia Commonwealth University police officers. Richmond’s oldest fire station has a date with a wrecking ball after 114 years. This is Fire Station No. 12, which opened at 2223 W. Cary St. in 1908 when horses pulled the equipment to fires. Plans for replacing this historic station with a new building at the site began in earnest last year. The city has invested in design and is now reviewing construction bids that were received by the Tuesday deadline. This ugly scene shows all that remains of fire-ravaged playground equipment. Location: Fairfield Court Elementary School in the East End. The $120,000 in swings, slides and other equipment was torched Friday, depriving neighborhood children of a popular play space. Believe it or not, this is the ninth case of arson of school playground equipment in Richmond in just the past two years. Replacements have cost more than $1 million, with the school system having to pay $50,000 on each for insurance deductibles. In a few cases, private donors have contributed. No one can understand why this equipment is being targeted.

Spectators have a ringside seat last Sunday as workers use powerful machines to de- molish the parking deck of the vacant Richmond Plaza building at 7th and Cary streets in Downtown. Clearing the parking deck and building is the first step toward building the planned 20-story office space for Dominion Resources. Demolition is expected to take four months, including creating room for four levels of underground parking. The next phase of two years involves construction of a 413-foot-tall facility that is expected to cost more than $100 million to build and outfit. The new building’s opening is planned for early 2019.

Rendering by Kendall/Heaton Associates Changing the skyline Work began Monday on this 20-story, sail-shaped office tower that Dominion Resources is constructing in Downtown. The building, which is expected to have 1,000 employees and four floors of parking underground, is to open in 2019 in the block bounded by Cary, 6th, 7th and Canal streets. Dominion and the builders, Hourigan Construction Inc. of Richmond and Clayco Corp. of St. Louis, are promising that minority firms will play a significant role in the development. Dominion has hired Kenneth Johnson of the marketing and public relations firm Johnson Inc. as a diversity consultant. Dominion has yet to release the cost for the building, but it is projected to be around $100 million.
