Hundreds of people peruse the various wares in the African Market at the 29th Annual Capital City Kwanzaa Festival held last Saturday at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. The event featured speaker Dr. Runoko Rashidi, a noted anthropologist and historian, who addressed the group via Skype, as well as numerous activities for families and entertainers. This year’s theme: “Ascension,” marking the crossing from the 400th year of the arrival in Virginia of the first enslaved Africans to the hope for the future.

Hundreds of people gather in Norfolk’s Young Terrace public housing community Tuesday night to pay tribute to late boxing champion Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, who grew up in the neighborhood. Whitaker Lane, located about a block away from the vigil held on the grounds of P.B. Young Elementary School, had been named for the legendary boxer. Speakers included Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander, Norfolk Delegate Jay Jones and Virginia Beach City Councilman Aaron Rouse, a former NFL player.

It was a day to remember last Saturday as hundreds of people gathered for the unveiling of the Maggie L. Walker statue in the new plaza at Broad and Adams streets in Downtown. The 10-foot bronze statue of the pioneer businesswoman and icon was revealed to fanfare and cheers on what would have been Mrs. Walker’s 153rd birthday. Speakers included city officials, sculptor Antonio “Toby” Mendez and Walker descendants. The new monument to a true hero serves as a gateway to Jackson Ward, where Mrs. Walker’s home, now a National Park Service historic site, is open to the public.

The political advocacy group MoveOn’s Banned Bookmobile made a stop at Richmond’s Main Public Library in Downtown during its trips around the country. The bookmobile is seeking counter book bans imposed by Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis and mostly Republican leaders in other states by rallying supporters and distributing free copies of award-winning books ranging from “To Kill a Mockingbird” to “The Hunger Games,” “Gender Queer,” “The Kite Runner” and “Beloved.” Dr. Lauranett Lee, a historian, educator and candidate for a seat on the Chesterfield County School Board, was among the speakers at the event.

Sandra Sellars/Richmond Free Press The first of 14 stations for GRTC’s Bus Rapid Transit is under construction. Work began last week on the station located on the north side of the 2200 block of West Broad Street between Allison and Strawberry streets, officials said. The work has closed the westbound curb lane on Broad Street in that area. Separately, the work to relocate utilities continues along the south side of Broad Street and along East Main Street to make way for additional transit stations. About $65 million is being poured into developing the speedier bus line — dubbed The Pulse — that will run 7.6 miles between Rocketts Landing in the east to The Shops at Willow Lawn in the west. The city is contributing $7.6 million and Henrico County $400,000. The federal government is providing $25 million, with the state contributing the remaining $32 million. The Pulse is expected to be in operation next October, officials have said.

Dollars for scholars // The 33 winners of the KLM Scholarship Foundation’s 2016 Book Scholarships gather for the awards ceremony last Saturday at Linwood Holton Elementary School in Richmond. The students, who live in Virginia and Maryland, will be attending 15 different colleges and universities in Virginia in the fall. KLM is a nonprofit that has been awarding book scholarships since 2002 to students facing financial obstacles. Scholarship winners must have a 3.0 or better GPA and demonstrate leadership qualities. Cory Mosley, president of Cory Mosley Communications, was the guest speaker at the ceremony. Founder Kimberley L. Martin said the foundation has awarded $184,100 in book scholarships since its start.

Virginia is for lovers and pride Alvion Davenport, left, Ms. Black RVA Pride takes the microphone to highlight several of the organizations and vendors at last Saturday’s inaugural Black Pride RVA at Diversity Richmond in North Side. The two-day event, designed to educate, embrace and celebrate the unique experiences of Richmond’s black LGBTQ community, drew several hundred people despite rain that moved the event indoors. Featured were speakers and workshops on a variety of topics, entertainment and a worship service Sunday at Third Street Bethel AME Church. Intern Tariq Crumbly, a recent Virginia Commonwealth University graduate, helped with the event.

Standing together // In the wake of a rash of vandalism at Jewish cemeteries and community centers across the nation, more than 200 people attend a unity rally Sunday at Emek Sholom Holocaust Memorial Cemetery in Henrico County as a show of solidarity. Speakers from several faith traditions participated in “Standing Together: Remember and Respond.” The event at the cemetery, located within Forest Lawn Cemetery, was designed to support those who have been targeted by recent events and to stand in unity against divisive and bigoted actions and rhetoric. The Free Press joined other area businesses and organizations to provide book scholarship awards through the KLM Scholarship Foundation Inc. More than $30,000 was awarded to 30 students from Virginia at last Saturday’s awards ceremony at Linwood Holton Elementary School on North Side. Speakers included Kimberley L. Martin, who founded the Richmond-based nonprofit. It has awarded nearly $150,000 in book scholarships since its founding in 2002.
