Holiday flair in the city // Easter weekend in Richmond was filled with sunshine and fun. People of all ages flocked to two staple favorite events celebrating the holiday — the Dominion Family Easter at Maymont last Saturday and Sunday’s Easter on Parade on Monument Avenue. Children enjoyed decorating eggs and bonnets, competing in games and visiting with the Easter Bunny at the event on the rolling grounds of Maymont. Thousands enjoyed seeing and being seen as they strolled along Monument Avenue wearing their Easter finery, bonnets and costumes. The street was closed to traffic between Davis and Allen avenues, turning the tree-lined boulevard into a venue for music and entertainment for people and pets alike. Christopher Hudert walks on stilts high above the crowds strolling along Monument Avenue, and Darryl Burrell’s outfit, right, is topped by a handmade crown of fresh flowers.

The event, held at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in the East End, offered health screenings, information and consultations with health professionals. It was the 11th year for the community event put on by VCU students with the assistance of physicians and community organizations. Second Chances provides mental health counseling for youths and adults, case management and links to other community resources.

Watching the distribution at George Wythe High School, is interim schools Superintendent Thomas E. “Tommy” Kranz, far right. Officials from the wireless communication company and its foundation gave students the free equipment and wireless service at the Oct. 19 event. Through the next four years, a total of 5,250 city students who lack computers and internet service at home will receive electronic tablets to help them do their homework. The distribution is part of the company’s 1Million Project that seeks to close the digital divide that makes it difficult for students to achieve academic success.

Dance of Petersburg, who represents parts of Richmond and four other localities in the General Assembly, is recognized by the Richmond City Council on Monday night for nearly 25 years of public service. As an elected official, she previously served in the House of Delegates and on Petersburg City Council for 12 years, including several terms as Petersburg mayor from 1992 to 2004. Zeus plays to crowd at Mama J’s // Zeus McClurkin, a member of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, captivates the room of 37 George Wythe High School honor students during a special luncheon Wednesday honoring the young people at Mama J’s Kitchen in Jackson Ward. The Columbus, Ohio, native engaged the students with a pep talk before showing off his skills. The event was part of Richmond’s first Black Restaurant Week highlighting black-owned and operated restaurants in the city. The promotion, with fixed-price lunch and dinner specials at 20 restaurants, runs through Sunday, March 12. Mr. McClurkin and the Harlem Globetrotters have an exhibition game 7 p.m. Friday, March 10, at the Richmond Coliseum.

Yates and teachers around an indoor fountain at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington. The students also visited the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which hosted the Feb. 22 trip in partnership with The New Y-CAPP, Youth Challenged Advised & Positively Promoted. At the foundation, they learned about efforts to advance the global black community and the separate work of members of the Congressional Black Caucus. The goal of the trip: To enable the students to gain a better understanding of the contributions of African-Americans.

Rallying for ‘sanctuary’ // With signs and chants, more than 100 immigration advocates rally Monday afternoon outside City Hall to urge Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney and the Richmond City Council to declare Richmond a “sanctuary city” and defy stepped-up federal efforts to deport people who lack green cards or student, work or visitation visas. Later, advocates pushed their view during the public comment session of the evening’s council meeting. So far, they have not moved government leaders, including the mayor, who has avoided using the “sanctuary” term.
