William “Dill” Dillon went from being one of Virginia Union University’s all-time football greats to achieving excellence in another sport — slow-pitch softball.

Dillon was inducted Saturday, Nov. 21, into the Central Virginia Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Hall of Fame. The event was held at The Place at Innsbrook in Henrico County.

Recruited out of Detroit by former VUU Assistant Coach Bill Williamson, Dillon was a three-time Associated Press, Little All-America defensive back from 1979 to 1982 under VUU Coach Willard Bailey.

During his four seasons at VUU, the Panthers were 38-8-2 and went to four straight NCAA Division II playoffs.

He finished with 30 career interceptions, including 11 in 1981, and was invited to the preseason training camp of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

Dillon remains an active softball player with the Mid-Atlantic and OMEGA senior teams, and is umpire-in-chief for SoftballNation.

Also, he assigns officials for City of Richmond youth football and serves as a basketball referee with Central Virginia Board 90.

Others inducted into the ASA Hall of Fame are umpire Andy Crane, administrator Julie Pollard, and players Ray Goodman, Doug Mitchell and Loretta Seredni.

Like Dillon, Seredni has college athletic credentials.

Seredni was among Virginia Commonwealth University’s first female basketball stars in the mid-1970s.
