Hampton University is discontinuing its men’s and women’s golf teams because of the financial impact of the coronavirus.

This past season, the teams included five men and four women under Coach Dennis Nelson.

According to HU’s website, it will take some $600,000 to fully reinstall the program. That would cover operational expenses, scholarships and salaries.

HU is not alone in trimming its list of sponsored athletics. Old Dominion University has dropped wrestling, a sport it has excelled at since 1957.
