Isaiah Todd’s friends and fans from Richmond won’t have too far to travel to see him play professionally.
The 6-foot-10 former John Marshall High standout will start his NBA career with the Washington Wizards.
Todd was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks with the first pick of the second round (31st overall) and was quickly traded on draft night to the Washington Wizards.
Originally from Baltimore, Todd lived three years in Richmond, playing as an eighth-grader for Henderson Middle School and as a freshman and sophomore for John Marshall High School.
In 2018, he led Coach Ty White’s Justices to the State 3A title with a 63-42 win over Western Albemarle at the Siegel Center.
Todd then transferred to Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., for his junior and senior seasons.
Among the nation’s top recruits, he originally signed with the University of Michigan’s Coach Juwan Howard. But instead of enrolling at Ann Arbor, Mich., he signed to play with Ignite of the NBA G-League.
In his one season with Ignite, he averaged 12.3 points and 4.9 rebounds.
There’s plenty of room for growth. Todd will not turn 20 until October. The Wizards’ first round choice (15th overall) was 6-foot-7 forward Corey Kispert from NCAA runner-up Gonzaga University.
Todd is at least the second player from John Marshall High to be drafted. In 1981, the New Jersey Nets picked Edmund Sherod, who played collegiately for Virginia Commonwealth University, with the 72nd overall pick in the fourth round.
Sherod played one full season in the NBA with the New York Knicks in 1982-83, averaging 6.3 points and 4.9 assists.
Cameron Thomas was another athlete with state connections who celebrated on NBA Draft Night.
Thomas was the 27th overall pick of round one by the Brooklyn Nets. Playing as a freshman this past season for Louisiana State University, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 23 points and made first team, All-SEC.
Thomas grew up in Chesapeake and began high school at Oscar Smith High School before transferring to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., for his final three seasons.
He left Oak Hill as the prestigious program’s all-time scorer. Thomas played for former VCU Coach Will Wade at LSU.
