Voter empowerment- Linda Jackson-Shaw, chair of the Connection Committee of Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, leads the organization’s training to register people to vote. The training session at the L. Douglas Wilder Library & Learning Resource Center at Virginia Union University was held Tuesday on National Voter Registration Day. Four area AKA chapters plan to hold a series of community and church meetings to register people to vote and to inform people of their voting rights. The meetings will be targeted before the Nov. 5 election and the presidential election in November 2020. The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 5 election, or to file an address change to vote, is Tuesday, Oct. 15. The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail is Tuesday, Oct. 29. In-person absentee voting began Sept. 20 and continues through Saturday, Nov. 2. To schedule a voter meeting with the AKAs, email info@akaupsilonomega.org.
