Jasmine Howell and her son, Aiden Howell, 4, relax and listen to speakers after participating in the Unity Walk through the Museum District last Friday to commemorate the 57th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Speakers at the event, organized by Coming to the Table, recited excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech that was delivered at the 1963 march. The walk also marked the 65th anniversary of the lynching of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was brutally murdered in Money, Miss., in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. His lynching, and a photo of his disfigured body lying in a casket that was published by JET magazine, drew widespread public attention to the brutality Black people faced, particularly in the South, and helped mobilize the Civil Rights Movement.

The Department of General Services continues work to excavate and construct a tunnel between the new General Assembly Building and the Capitol’s subterranean visitor center that opened in 2007. During the renovation, the Capitol building remains open to the public, but the closure affects the Capitol complex’s Meriwether Café, gift shop, exhibit area, press room and two meeting rooms.

Last Sunday hundreds of women and their supporters, including First Lady Pam Northam, center, celebrate Virginia being the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The event, Celebrate! 38, included a rally, speakers and a march from Monroe Park to the State Capitol on March 8, International Women’s Day. Thanks to a Democratic majority in the General Assembly for the first time in more than two decades, the ERA was approved in January. Thirty-eight states are needed to ratify any amendment to the U.S. Constitution. But the ERA’s future is uncertain, in part, because the 1982 deadline for ratification enacted by Congress was not met. Attorneys general from Virginia and other states have filed a lawsuit arguing that the deadline was not binding and seek to force federal officials to adopt the measure that would guarantee women equal rights under the law. Speakers at last Sunday’s rally included Kate Kelly, a human rights attorney at Equality Now; Kamala Lopez, founder and co-director of Equal Means Equal; Liza Mickens, the great-great-granddaughter of the renowned banker and women’s empowerment advocate Maggie L. Walker; and Andrea Miller, executive director of the Poor People’s Campaign of Virginia.

This optimistic slogan just seems like a bad joke. It’s attached to the front of this long-vacant glass palace in Downtown. The “Building A Brighter Future” slogan sits above the entry to the one-time food court and restaurant space of the long-gone 6th Street Marketplace, a failed Downtown shopping mall, most of which was torn down. This section, which survived, has been closed for at least seven years, with no indication city officials are actively marketing the space. For several years, private developers offered proposals to transform the building into apartments, but the city showed little interest and nothing came of the ideas. So, for now, the brighter future remains on hold.

Hundreds of people peruse the various wares in the African Market at the 29th Annual Capital City Kwanzaa Festival held last Saturday at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. The event featured speaker Dr. Runoko Rashidi, a noted anthropologist and historian, who addressed the group via Skype, as well as numerous activities for families and entertainers. This year’s theme: “Ascension,” marking the crossing from the 400th year of the arrival in Virginia of the first enslaved Africans to the hope for the future.

Dozens of people came to the opening Sunday of “Unbound 2019: Truth & Reconciliation: Part III, Emancipation and Enlightenment Up from Slavery” at the Main Street Station Gallery, which includes a tribute to African-Americans in Virginia who were lynched in the decades after the Civil War. Several people attending the exhibit became emotional while reading the names and information about those who were lynched in the state. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, more than 4,000 people were lynched across the South between 1877 and 1950, while nearly 100 lynchings were documented in Virginia during that time. Speakers at the opening included Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Norfolk State University, and Maurice Henderson, whose trip to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Ala., inspired the Richmond tribute.

Burying the past A small group of mostly young people took shovel to dirt and buried a Confederate flag near the James River on Memorial Day in a symbolic funeral for the symbol of racial hatred.
