Barber has spoken publicly about his battle with a form of arthritis known as ankylosing spondylitis that can lead to, among other things, inflammation and fusion of the spine. By driving over the black rubber tubing across the roadway, this car adds to the count of vehicles using this street on Monday in Richmond’s Museum District. Location: 2900 block of Grove Avenue. Collecting accurate data on the number of vehicles using a roadway is part of the work of the Virginia Department of Transportation, which regularly sets out counters and the connecting tubing on streets and roads across the state. PEACEMAKER The debate over the Iran deal brings to mind President Jimmy Carter, center, and the crucial role he played 36 years ago in brokering a lasting peace treaty between two implacable enemies, Egypt and Israel. This iconic photo was taken March 26, 1979, on the White House lawn after the treaty was signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, left, and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Sadly, we learned Wednesday that Mr. Carter, 90, has liver cancer that has spread to other parts of his body. We pray for peace and comfort for this world peacemaker and his family.

Henrico resident Robin Williams, lead right, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2020 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mrs. Williams, who is legally blind, relied on her husband, Larry D. Williams for support, in that he was the only family member who could be with her inside the hospital due to the COVID19 restrictions at the time. Mrs. Williams’ breast cancer treatment plan included 16 rounds of radiation at the VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond. Since coming home to recover nearly three years ago, Mrs. Williams continually has been supported by her family and friends.

A huge mural across the top of The Diamond honors the Richmond 34, the Virginia Union University students who were arrested in February 1960 during a lunch counter sit-in protesting the whites-only service at Thalhimers department store in Downtown. The mural, painted by Andre Shank, is one of several initiatives the Richmond Flying Squirrels is undertaking to honor the former students and their history.

Pet benefit // People and their furry friends enjoy FETCH a CURE’s 10th Annual Pets on Parade Benefit & Auction last Friday at Plant Zero in South Side. The charity auction raises money for the organization’s mission to further pet cancer awareness, education and treatment. Racing for a cure // Thousands of people donned sneakers and pink T-shirts for last Saturday’s 21st Annual Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure to raise money for breast cancer. The event featured a competitive run and a recreational run - walk across the James River at the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, along with a cancer survivors’ parade and an awards ceremony. The political advocacy group MoveOn’s Banned Bookmobile made a stop at Richmond’s Main Public Library in Downtown during its trips around the country. The bookmobile is seeking counter book bans imposed by Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis and mostly Republican leaders in other states by rallying supporters and distributing free copies of award-winning books ranging from “To Kill a Mockingbird” to “The Hunger Games,” “Gender Queer,” “The Kite Runner” and “Beloved.” Dr. Lauranett Lee, a historian, educator and candidate for a seat on the Chesterfield County School Board, was among the speakers at the event.

Community activist Farid Alan Schintzius is once again using billboards to send a message on a major Richmond proposal. This is one of two new messages he and a group of like-minded opponents of the proposed $1.5 billion Coliseum replacement plan have installed to counter the push by Mayor Levar M. Stoney and the Navy Hill District Corp. to advance the project. The electronic billboard seen here is in the 5900 block of West Board Street facing eastbound traffic. Another is on Interstate 195, according to Mr. Schintzius. In 2014, Mr. Schintzius was involved in using billboards to oppose the plan to relocate Richmond’s ballpark to Shockoe Bottom under a redevelopment plan that then Mayor Dwight C. Jones was promoting. That plan ultimately failed.

Carytown was filled with the living dead last Saturday as scores of ghoulishly costumed people participated in the 15th Annual Richmond Zombie Walk. The event, which draws even more spectators than participants, benefits the American Cancer Society. Participating zombies gathered at a staging area at Boat Lake in Byrd Park, where donations for the cancer society were collected and prizes were awarded in categories including the “Most Disgusting,” “Best Couple,” “Best Group” and “Zombie of the Year.” Photos were taken because, once in character, the zombies were asked to refrain from taking photos during the walk. The creatively costumed group then went to the starting point at the Byrd Theatre where they slithered, lurched, crawled and limped along the sidewalk in full zombie splendor up Cary Street to Nansemond Street, where they turned and paraded the five blocks back to the Byrd Theatre. Already, plans are being cooked up for next year’s pre-Halloween event.

Isaiah “Prince Trombone” Robinson serenades passing motorists as fellow musician, Robert Johnson III, accompanies him on an electric drum outside The National in the 700 block of East Broad Street. The venue currently is closed because of the coronavirus. The two 23- year-old musicians began their impromptu concerts after they were laid off from their full-time gigs. Their goal: To deliver some upbeat sounds to counter the pandemic’s gloom and to possibly earn some spare change from the few pedestrians in Downtown. Other in Richmond musicians have been sharing their talents on their porches or in parks. One example is saxophonist James “Plunky” Branch, who regularly turns his porch into a solo concert platform for those within earshot in his West End neighborhood.
