The yearly event, sponsored by the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Richmond and Vicinity, is a part of a Richmond tradition celebrating the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation that freed enslaved persons in the Confederate states, including those in Virginia. Richmond was once a major marketplace for the buying and selling of enslaved persons. The speakers and the music moved many in the audience.

The adjunct education professor at the University of Richmond teaches one weekly online class now from the comfort of home. “I know I thrive in a face-to-face setting,” she said, while admitting that online teaching “takes a little more effort.” The pandemic, she said, has brought a pause to most everyone’s life. First African Baptist grew out of First Baptist, which was established in 1780 and included African-Americans among its members. In 1841, white members built a new First Baptist Church, allowing freed and enslaved black people to buy the original building and start First African Baptist Church. This 1918, seven-passenger touring car produced by Kline Motor Car Company was part of the fleet owned by A.D. Price, a prosperous Black businessman and Richmond funeral home director. The car is one of two known to still exist of about 6,000 made. It is on display in the museum’s Great Hall.
