Hundreds of people gather for the dedication and grand opening of the $25 million addition to the Virginia War Memorial that honors those who gave their lives in military service. The ceremony, held last Saturday at the war memorial at 621 S. Belvidere St., featured retired Gen. John P. Jumper of Spotsylvania, former chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, as the keynote speaker. The expansion project took two years to complete and includes the new C. Kenneth Wright Pavilion, a 25,000-square-foot building, and an expanded Shrine of Memory listing the names of those killed in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and other recent military actions. The facility has a new exhibit hall, art gallery and research library, as well as a 350-seat auditorium. The expansion also provides room for the Virginia Medal of Honor Gallery and created an additional 128 parking spaces in a new underground parking deck.

Hundreds of people peruse the various wares in the African Market at the 29th Annual Capital City Kwanzaa Festival held last Saturday at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. The event featured speaker Dr. Runoko Rashidi, a noted anthropologist and historian, who addressed the group via Skype, as well as numerous activities for families and entertainers. This year’s theme: “Ascension,” marking the crossing from the 400th year of the arrival in Virginia of the first enslaved Africans to the hope for the future.

Dozens of people came to the opening Sunday of “Unbound 2019: Truth & Reconciliation: Part III, Emancipation and Enlightenment Up from Slavery” at the Main Street Station Gallery, which includes a tribute to African-Americans in Virginia who were lynched in the decades after the Civil War. Several people attending the exhibit became emotional while reading the names and information about those who were lynched in the state. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, more than 4,000 people were lynched across the South between 1877 and 1950, while nearly 100 lynchings were documented in Virginia during that time. Speakers at the opening included Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Norfolk State University, and Maurice Henderson, whose trip to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Ala., inspired the Richmond tribute.

A line of people marches along a portion of the Richmond Slave Trail beside the James River on their way from the Old Manchester docks to Downtown. The walk on Aug. 20 was led by Janine Y. Bell of the Elegba Folklore Society and was symbolic of the many slave coffles in Richmond, which was one of the largest markets for the sale of enslaved people before the end of the Civil War. The walk was one element of the three-day Black Lives Global Summit that the Connecticut-based Community Healing Network sponsored. The summit, held largely at Virginia Union University in concert with other events related to the 400th anniversary of the forced arrival of the first Africans in English North America, focused on providing emotional and psychological healing from the lingering impact of slavery and included a range of speakers focusing on the past, present and future for people of African descent. Hundreds of people gather in Norfolk’s Young Terrace public housing community Tuesday night to pay tribute to late boxing champion Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, who grew up in the neighborhood. Whitaker Lane, located about a block away from the vigil held on the grounds of P.B. Young Elementary School, had been named for the legendary boxer.
