Ready, set, run! // Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, left, kicks off the political season in Virginia Monday with the 41st Annual Labor Day Cookout at his waterfront home in Newport News. Several hundred people eager to meet and mingle with candidates for various offices throughout the region turned out for the event that featured food, music and politics. Among the speakers were the three Democratic candidates at the top of the state ticket. They are, from left, Attorney General Mark Herring, who is seeking re-election; Lt. Gov. Ralph S. Northam, who is running for governor; and Justin Fairfax, who is running for lieutenant governor. Each fired up the crowd and urged people to turn out to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Sandra Sellars/Richmond Free Press Workers continue to pack and clear out the offices of delegates and senators at the General Assembly Building, 201 N. 9th St. in Capitol Square, which is slated for demolition later this year. The boxes are being moved two blocks to the Pocahontas Building at 900 E. Main St., which will be the legislature’s office center until a replacement building is completed on the site of the current building. The next step comes on Tuesday, July 11, when the state will sell surplus office equipment and other items to the public, government agencies and public schools. The sale is 9 a.m. for agencies and schools, with the public able to shop at 11 a.m. A portion of the General Assembly Building dates to 1912, when it was built for a bank. The building has housed the offices of state legislators since 1976. The governor and General Assembly have set aside $300 million for the new building and a new parking deck for Capitol Square. The money also will pay for renovation of Old City Hall, now part of the Capitol Square complex of state buildings.

Supporting the Environment // Despite blistering temperatures nearing 100, more than 600 people gathered at Brown’s Island last Saturday for a rally and march to Capitol Square and the Governor’s Mansion to protest the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, coal ash ponds, fracking, off-shore oil rigs and other threats to public and environmental health. A bevy of speakers addressed the crowd about climate chaos, the destruction of rural communities and health Sandra Sellars/Richmond Free Press threats because of laws and corporate decisions that put profit above people. People from across Virginia and the nation held signs and banners and chanted as they marched toward the Executive Mansion to urge Gov. Terry McAuliffe to support laws to protect people and the environment. Tents were set up on Brown’s Island, where organizers distributed water and sunscreen to participants.

New city-backed developments involving millions of dollars are beginning to take shape in the East End. Left, heavy machinery churns the ground at 1611 N. 31st St., site of the former Armstrong High School. The purpose: To prepare the site for development of 175 new apartments and 81 single-family homes. It is the first step in replacing the Creighton Court public housing community. A nonprofit, The Community Builders, is leading the project for the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Right, just six blocks west at Nine Mile Road, Fairmount Avenue and 25th Street, more heavy machinery is preparing the site for two four-story buildings. One building will provide space for Reynolds Community College’s $11.5 million culinary institute, a dozen apartments, a restaurant and offices. The second building is to include space for a modern grocery store and smaller retail shops and 42 apartments. Corporate leaders Steve and Kathy Merkel are spearheading the development that is expected to exceed $20 million. The revitalization of the area also includes new apartments on Venable Street and other smaller retail and residential developments across Church Hill.

A line of people marches along a portion of the Richmond Slave Trail beside the James River on their way from the Old Manchester docks to Downtown. The walk on Aug. 20 was led by Janine Y. Bell of the Elegba Folklore Society and was symbolic of the many slave coffles in Richmond, which was one of the largest markets for the sale of enslaved people before the end of the Civil War. The walk was one element of the three-day Black Lives Global Summit that the Connecticut-based Community Healing Network sponsored. The summit, held largely at Virginia Union University in concert with other events related to the 400th anniversary of the forced arrival of the first Africans in English North America, focused on providing emotional and psychological healing from the lingering impact of slavery and included a range of speakers focusing on the past, present and future for people of African descent. Dozens of people came to the opening Sunday of “Unbound 2019: Truth & Reconciliation: Part III, Emancipation and Enlightenment Up from Slavery” at the Main Street Station Gallery, which includes a tribute to African-Americans in Virginia who were lynched in the decades after the Civil War. Several people attending the exhibit became emotional while reading the names and information about those who were lynched in the state. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, more than 4,000 people were lynched across the South between 1877 and 1950, while nearly 100 lynchings were documented in Virginia during that time. Speakers at the opening included Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Norfolk State University, and Maurice Henderson, whose trip to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Ala., inspired the Richmond tribute.

Hundreds of people gather for the dedication and grand opening of the $25 million addition to the Virginia War Memorial that honors those who gave their lives in military service. The ceremony, held last Saturday at the war memorial at 621 S. Belvidere St., featured retired Gen. John P. Jumper of Spotsylvania, former chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, as the keynote speaker. The expansion project took two years to complete and includes the new C. Kenneth Wright Pavilion, a 25,000-square-foot building, and an expanded Shrine of Memory listing the names of those killed in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and other recent military actions. The facility has a new exhibit hall, art gallery and research library, as well as a 350-seat auditorium. The expansion also provides room for the Virginia Medal of Honor Gallery and created an additional 128 parking spaces in a new underground parking deck.

Burying the past A small group of mostly young people took shovel to dirt and buried a Confederate flag near the James River on Memorial Day in a symbolic funeral for the symbol of racial hatred.
