The students also visited the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which hosted the Feb. 22 trip in partnership with The New Y-CAPP, Youth Challenged Advised & Positively Promoted. At the foundation, they learned about efforts to advance the global black community and the separate work of members of the Congressional Black Caucus. The goal of the trip: To enable the students to gain a better understanding of the contributions of African-Americans.

Donovan Walker, 58, of Richmond helps his godmother Caroline Bennett battle her leaves so she does not have to do it, he said on Tuesday, Nov. 8, during a short break from his task in the 2400 block of 2nd Avenue near Spruce Street. According to the City of Richmond’s website, the leaf collection program began Monday, Nov. 7, for the bagged collection option. The City allows up to 10 bags to be collected on a normal trash day. Other options provided by the city for leaf collection can be found by visiting http://www.rva.gov/public-works or by calling 3-1-1 or 646-LEAF.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin read the popular book “Where the Wild Things Are” to Alexis Evans’ first grade class at Carver Elementary School on Thursday, Jan. 19. The governor’s visit was in support of the expansion of a new Virginia education law, the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA).The legislation passed during last year’s Virginia General Assembly and becomes effective during the 2024-2025 school year. “We want to have an academic and education system that raises the ceiling for all of our children and recognizes that we have kids that need some extra support,” said Gov. Youngkin. “We can do both.”

“McLean,” an installation by Navine G. Dossos, is featured on the façade of the Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. The installation is part of the exhibit “So it appears” opening on Feb. 24 at the ICA, 601 W Broad St. The vinyl pieces used in the work are adapted from a series of paintings. According to the ICA’s website, “McLean, ”commissioned for the ICA’s Belvidere Street façade, is an adaptation of the artist’s former work “No Such Organization (2018-2020),” a series of 100 gouache paintings of icons and symbols. Each painting is in response to a news article following the disappearance and heinous murder, in October 2018, of journalist Jamal Khashoggi who lived in Mclean in Northern Virginia. Holiday flair in the city // Easter weekend in Richmond was filled with sunshine and fun. People of all ages flocked to two staple favorite events celebrating the holiday — the Dominion Family Easter at Maymont last Saturday and Sunday’s Easter on Parade on Monument Avenue. Children enjoyed decorating eggs and bonnets, competing in games and visiting with the Easter Bunny at the event on the rolling grounds of Maymont. Thousands enjoyed seeing and being seen as they strolled along Monument Avenue wearing their Easter finery, bonnets and costumes. The street was closed to traffic between Davis and Allen avenues, turning the tree-lined boulevard into a venue for music and entertainment for people and pets alike. Afroecology at ICA-The multi-tiered greenery of Rashid Johnson’s “Monument” serves as a centerpiece for a two-day Afroecology program held last weekend at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Institute for Contemporary Art featuring musical guests, visiting artists and craftspersons. A panel discussion on racial equity, urban agriculture and land justice on Saturday included from left, Xavier Brown, founder of Soilful City in Washington; Kirtrina Baxter, farm manager for Urban Creators in Philadelphia; Duron Chavis of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Henrico County; Michael Carter Jr., the small farm resource center coordinator for Virginia Cooperative Extension; and Stanley Morgan, also of the Urban Creators in Philadelphia. “Monument” is part of the “Provocations” exhibit showcasing Mr. Johnson’s work that will be on view through July 14 at the ICA, 601 W. Mandela Fellows at VCU // Fifty emerging leaders in the fields of public management, business and entrepreneurship from various African nations pose with Virginia Commonwealth University President Michael Rao and several staff members following an event Monday welcoming them to the Richmond campus. Participants in the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders will hear from scholars and elected officials and visit local businesses while in residence at VCU through July 31. The group also is scheduled to attend a reception hosted by Gov. Terry McAuliffe and First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe at the Executive Mansion and the annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony at Monticello. The VCU fellows are part of a larger coalition of 1,000 young leaders being hosted across the nation this summer through the Young African Leaders Initiative and President Obama’s effort to invest in the next generation of global leaders.

“Woman. Life. Freedom.,” a new mural painted on the side of a vacant car wash building at 1205 Arthur Ashe Blvd., shows support for protesters in Iran who are fighting in support of a young Iranian woman, Mahsa Jina Amini, pictured, who was wrongfully taken into custody by the Iranian police. She was in a coma for three days and died on Sept. 16, 2022. Her alleged crime? Ms. Amini, 22, was visiting the capital city of Tehran on vacation from another part of her country of Iran and the “Morality Police” arrested her because her hair was not properly secured under her hijab, a head covering worn by some Muslim women, explains Ari Abad, an Iranian-American who came to Richmond when she was 17. Dr. Betty N. Crutcher welcomes representatives of the W. Montague Cobb/National Medical Institute to the University of Richmond where her husband, Dr. Ronald Crutcher is president. With her, from left, are Martin Hamlette, executive director of the National Medical Association; Dr. Randall C. Morgan Jr., executive director of the Cobb Institute; Dr. Oliver T. Brooks, NMA president; Dr. Rahn K. Baley, Cobb board chair; and Terone B. Greene, Cobb board treasurer. UR’s first lady serves on the Cobb board and arranged the three-day visit last month of the board of the institute, whose mission is to use research and learning to reduce race-based health disparities and which also seeks to encourage more African-American college students to enter the medical field. Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, standing, and her 6-year-old grand-daughter Storie Znassi deliver fruit baskets and body lotion to residents of the Darby House senior apartment community in Henrico County last Friday for “I Am My Brother and Sister’s Keeper Day.” The special statewide designation for the day after Thanksgiving was approved by the General Assembly in 2018 by a resolution introduced by Delegate McQuinn. It asks Virginians to perform a random act of kindness on the Friday after the holiday. On this second annual “I Am My Brother and Sister’s Keeper Day,” Delegate McQuinn challenged people to have seven others join in doing something kind to make a difference in the lives of others. She and her granddaughter visit here with, from left, Ethel Davis, 81, Doris Laidler, 71, and Mary Berryman, 88. Other participants out doing kind acts for others on the special day included members of Delegate McQuinn’s legislative staff and members of the Richmond police and fire departments.

Adam George, right, of Washington, D.C., took first place in the 2023 Allianz Partners Richmond Marathon, finishing ahead of Roland Hakes of Irmo, S.C,. and Robert Mazzanti of Richmond. Mr. George finished in a time of 2:24:18, while Mr. Hakes came in at 2:28:37, followed by Mr. Mazzanti in 2:29:44. Bethany Sachtleben, above, was the first female to cross the finish line, followed by Ave Grosenheider and Rebecca McGavin. Sachtleben, of Broomfield, Co., finished in a time of 2:40:26, followed by Ms. Grosenheider, of Richmond, in 2:47:51, and McGavin, of Durham, N.C., in 2:51:20. The 2024 Allianz Partners Richmond Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16. A special $85 marathon entry fee, $75 half marathon entry fee, and $30 8k entry fee is available starting Sunday, Nov. 12, at 12 p.m. continuing through Thursday, Nov. 16. Supporting Obamacare // Gov. Terry McAuliffe, left, and U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine rally Virginians against Republican plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, during an event last Sunday in Capital Square. Nearly 1,000 people attended the event, which was joined by several other state, local and federal elected officials, including Lt. Gov. Ralph S. Northam, Rep. A. Donald McEachin of Richmond and Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott of Newport News. The rally at the Bell Tower was one of dozens held across the United States last weekend to coalesce support for saving the health insurance program. Republicans have made repeal of the Affordable Care Act a priority with the election of President-elect Donald Trump. More than 400,000 Virginians and 20 million Americans have enrolled in health insurance plans since the law was passed in 2010. Sen. Kaine, who ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic vice presidential candidate, is encouraging Virginians to share how the ACA has helped them or a family member, or to offer suggestions for improvement. City workers Zachary Smith and D’Jermaine Layne remove graffiti from a building in the 2900 block of West Broad Street that a city official described as an “eyesore in the middle of the city.” Mr. Smith and Mr. Layne are part of a Richmond Department of Public Works crew that focuses on eliminating unwanted scribbles, initials and messages spraypainted in public spaces and on public and privately owned buildings. The department currently deploys two teams of six people and is now assembling a third team to expand the effort, according to Bobby Vincent, director of the Department of Public Works. Mayor Levar M. Stoney visited the project Monday to spotlight the department’s efforts to remove graffiti and to show that the city is committed to this seemingly never-ending effort to keep buildings spruced up. Mr. Vincent reported that the crews already have removed graffiti from 1,000 locations since July 1, double the number from the same period in 2020-21. His hope is that the dedicated crews can deal with at least 1,500 locations by June 30 and do even more locations next year. In addition, the department is contacting building owners to get them involved in this ongoing initiative. “We want to be able to clean up,” he said, but he also noted that owners need to take responsibility for tackling the problem as well.
