Joel Embiid sports the colors red, white and blue for his NBA team, the Philadelphia 76ers.
So it’s fitting he’ll wear red, white and blue for the United States for the upcoming Olympics in Paris.
Born in Cameroon, the 7-foot Embiid could have played for either the U.S., France or his native land when the Olympics commence July 26. He has citizenship in all three nations but never committed to the Olympics until now.
“It was a tough decision, obviously,” he told the media. “I love all the options.”
Playing a role in his decision was his 3-year-old son, Arthur, who is a U.S. citizen and the son of Anne De Paula.
“My son is American. You can add that to the fact I’ve been focusing on my family for a long time … my family, my son,” Embiid, 30, said.
When Embiid was presented the season MVP for 2023, he held his son in one arm and the trophy in the other. Also in ’23, the city of Philadelphia named Embiid “The MVP of Philadelphia.”
“I’ve been here for such a long time,” said Embiid, who came to the states when he was 16.
Despite missing time with a meniscus injury, Embiid averaged 34.1 points and 11 rebounds this season for the Sixers.
With Embiid, the U.S. should be a solid favorite for a fifth straight Olympic Gold.
Had he chosen France, the Frenchmen might have been the top choice. In the 2020 Olympics, France defeated the U.S. in a Group game (breaking a U.S. 25-game winning streak) and lost to the Americans 87-82 in the finals.
NBA center Rudy Gobert, 31, is among the talented French Olympians. He plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
