Two signs depict the old and the new when it comes to the name of this North Side street whose residents include U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine and his wife, Anne B. Holton. The aging street sign still reads Con- federate Avenue, while the sign in the next picture, in the median, displays the new name City Council officially approved last month for the street — Laburnum Park Boulevard. The city Department of Public Works has not announced when the replacement signs bearing the new name will be put in place.

Several hundred people turned out last Saturday for the benefit Derby Day Party in Richmond to enjoy music, games, food and the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby and raise money for the Professionals Reaching Out to the Community (PROC). Leaders of the event included from left, Charmayne B. Vincent, chair of PROC; and the two co-chairs of the event, Janet Hawkes-Pleasants and Natalie Smith. Location: Bon Secours Training Center on Leigh Street. PROC is best known for sponsoring The Beautillion, an etiquette and leadership program for male high school students.

Zeus plays to crowd at Mama J’s // Zeus McClurkin, a member of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, captivates the room of 37 George Wythe High School honor students during a special luncheon Wednesday honoring the young people at Mama J’s Kitchen in Jackson Ward. The Columbus, Ohio, native engaged the students with a pep talk before showing off his skills. The event was part of Richmond’s first Black Restaurant Week highlighting black-owned and operated restaurants in the city. The promotion, with fixed-price lunch and dinner specials at 20 restaurants, runs through Sunday, March 12. Mr. McClurkin and the Harlem Globetrotters have an exhibition game 7 p.m. Friday, March 10, at the Richmond Coliseum.

Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care // Celebrating 50 years of service Richmond Delegate Betsy B. Carr, left, presents a General Assembly resolution congratulating the Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care for 50 years of providing counseling to families, couples, children and individuals to “restore healing and hope.” Receiving the proclamation at a celebration Sept. 28 at the Virginia Historical Society are Frances Broaddus-Crutchfield, president of VIPCare’s board and contributing Free Press writer, and Dr. Douglas M. Thorpe, executive director of the Henrico County-based nonprofit. Sister Cora Marie Billings, a member of the VIPCare board, also was honored for her advocacy and work to promote counseling in the Richmond region. VIPCare was founded in 1967 by a multiracial, ecumenical group.

Burying the past A small group of mostly young people took shovel to dirt and buried a Confederate flag near the James River on Memorial Day in a symbolic funeral for the symbol of racial hatred. City Hall is being proactive in pushing safe practices during the pandemic. This sign was prominently displayed outside the second floor City Council Chambers on Monday before the nine council members were sworn in — including seven women, the most ever. Only a few people, mostly media and some family members, were allowed in the chamber for the ceremony. Others were able to connect to online channels to see the public ceremony.

A ceremonial mechanical excavator is on site for the groundbreaking at the CoStar Group’s campus in Downtown Richmond in front of the current CoStar headquarters building at 5th and Tredegar streets.
