Work is underway to reopen Broad Street in Downtown now that the bike races are over. On Tuesday, a crew was still busy dismantling the stands and barriers for spectators that were in place during the UCI Road World Championships that ended Sunday. Officials anticipate traffic will be moving again on Broad between 3rd and 7th streets this week. This portion of the street has been closed since Sept. 11.

Yellow tape now blocks the granite steps leading into the Richmond Public Library’s Main Branch in Downtown. Over the years, winter’s cold has cracked the steps, making them dangerous, according to Clay Dishon, interim library director. The city Department of Public Works is planning needed repairs so patrons can once again use the stairway at 101 E. Franklin St.

The 40-foot pedestal where the enormous bronze statue of Confederate Robert E. Lee on horseback once stood on Monument Avenue was finally cleared away Wednesday afternoon by crews working for 14 days. The Lee statue was removed in September. The site is to be cleaned and the ground leveled. The state is expected to turn ownership of the land over to the City of Richmond after Christmas.

Reconciliation rally // Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney addresses a crowd of hundreds Sunday during a solidarity rally at Richmond’s Slavery Reconciliation Statue at 15th and Main streets in Shockoe Bottom. Participants at the hour long vigil remembered the victims of the weekend’s violent clashes in Charlottesville over that city’s planned removal of Confederate statues. In 2018 in Virginia, 278 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes and more than 4,400 people were injured, according to MADD. Fatalities were up 12 percent over 2017, according to the organization’s data. Victims’ names were read as candles were lighted Monday night. The organization hopes the event will bring healing to families and motivation to curb impaired driving.

Beating the heat Sweltering temperatures that reached nearly 100 degrees this week were enough to convince Donovan Walker to cool off by jumping into the Hotchkiss Pool at 701 E.
