First African Baptist grew out of First Baptist, which was established in 1780 and included African-Americans among its members. In 1841, white members built a new First Baptist Church, allowing freed and enslaved black people to buy the original building and start First African Baptist Church. First African Baptist replaced the building in 1876 and then sold it in the 1950s to move to the church’s current home on Hanes Avenue in North Side.

Bringing Henrietta Lacks to life Oprah Winfrey stars as Deborah Lacks, the daughter of the title character in the HBO film “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” that premieres 8 p.m. Saturday, April 22, on HBO. Mrs. Lacks, a Virginia native who moved her family from their Halifax County tobacco farm in 1941 to Maryland, was a cancer patient at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She died in 1951 not knowing that her tumor cells, now known as HeLa cells, were harvested by hospital researchers and duplicated for use even today by scientists for medical testing around the world. The HBO movie is based on the best-selling book about Mrs. Lacks and her unknowing and uncompensated contribution to the world. Million Man March 20 years later - Throngs of people from across the nation flooded the National Mall in Washington for the Justice Or Else rally marking the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March. People of all ages, ethnicities, faiths and backgrounds were drawn to the capital for the event initiated by Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan. Be a lifesaver // Representatives of three Virginia Union University organizations display plaques awarded to their groups Nov. 21 for having the highest number of registrants for the “Be The Match Registry.” That’s a national bone marrow databank designed to connect possible donors to people in need of a marrow transplant to fight diseases such as sickle cell anemia, leukemia and blood cancers. Here, Nutzy, the mascot of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, climbs the steps of The Diamond baseball stadium to kick off the team’s first event of its 11th season — a block party last Saturday at the stadium on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. Nutzy’s Block Party included live music, dancing, local vendors and ballpark tours. It was the first opportunity for fans to buy game tickets before the season home opener on Thursday, April 16, against the Bowie Baysox of Maryland. The Richmond Flying Squirrels are the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

Jean Patterson Boone, publisher of the Richmond Free Press, talks with Virginia Commonwealth University Professor Chioke I’Anson about the vision and trials in starting the award-winning newspaper 30 years ago during the George Mason Award ceremony Feb. 3 sponsored by the Virginia Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Mrs. Boone and her late husband, Raymond H. Boone, who founded the publication in January 1992, were recognized by the organization with the George Mason Award for their outstanding contributions to the field of journalism. The ceremony, held at the VCU Institute for Contemporary Art and livestreamed virtually, was originally scheduled in 2020 but delayed because of the pandemic. The portrait of the Boones shown on a screen above the stage was taken in April 2014 by Cleveland-based photojournalist Annie O’Neill just months before Mr. Boone’s death in June 2014 of pancreatic cancer. The Free Press also was recognized by Richmond Delegate Jeff Bourne during Monday’s floor session of the Virginia House of Delegates for its 30-year legacy to “inform, educate and empower readers” in the Richmond area.

A giant symbol of the times now adorns the facade of the Science Museum of Virginia as it prepares to reopen to the public 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. The museum, at 2500 W. Broad St. near Downtown, has been closed to visitors for months because of the pandemic. The giant mask is a reminder that visitors will need to wear one to get in. The museum is one of many cultural spaces that are putting new requirements in place in moving from virtual events to actually welcoming visitors. In addition to the mask requirement, the museum will have visitors buy timed admission tickets in advance. It also will limit the number of people entering during operating hours. The museum currently is hosting the state Senate during the General Assembly’s special session.
