John Marshall High School’s basketball teams returned from Luanda, Angola, a country in Southwest Africa, on Sept. 5. Freedom.,” a new mural painted on the side of a vacant car wash building at 1205 Arthur Ashe Blvd., shows support for protesters in Iran who are fighting in support of a young Iranian woman, Mahsa Jina Amini, pictured, who was wrongfully taken into custody by the Iranian police. She was in a coma for three days and died on Sept. 16, 2022. Her alleged crime? Ms. Amini, 22, was visiting the capital city of Tehran on vacation from another part of her country of Iran and the “Morality Police” arrested her because her hair was not properly secured under her hijab, a head covering worn by some Muslim women, explains Ari Abad, an Iranian-American who came to Richmond when she was 17. Gov. Glenn Youngkin and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin read the popular book “Where the Wild Things Are” to Alexis Evans’ first grade class at Carver Elementary School on Thursday, Jan. 19. The governor’s visit was in support of the expansion of a new Virginia education law, the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA).The legislation passed during last year’s Virginia General Assembly and becomes effective during the 2024-2025 school year. “We want to have an academic and education system that raises the ceiling for all of our children and recognizes that we have kids that need some extra support,” said Gov. Youngkin. “We can do both.”

Donovan Walker, 58, of Richmond helps his godmother Caroline Bennett battle her leaves so she does not have to do it, he said on Tuesday, Nov. 8, during a short break from his task in the 2400 block of 2nd Avenue near Spruce Street. According to the City of Richmond’s website, the leaf collection program began Monday, Nov. 7, for the bagged collection option. The City allows up to 10 bags to be collected on a normal trash day. Other options provided by the city for leaf collection can be found by visiting http://www.rva.gov/public-works or by calling 3-1-1 or 646-LEAF.

A ceremonial mechanical excavator is on site for the groundbreaking at the CoStar Group’s campus in Downtown Richmond in front of the current CoStar headquarters building at 5th and Tredegar streets. CoStar, founded in 1987, provides commercial real estate information, analytics, and online marketplaces for real estate transactions. Community partners, CoStar employees and the public witnessed the ceremonial groundbreaking and announcements about the $460 million project that is projected to bring at least 2,000 new jobs to the area.

This 1918, seven-passenger touring car produced by Kline Motor Car Company was part of the fleet owned by A.D. Price, a prosperous Black businessman and Richmond funeral home director. The car is one of two known to still exist of about 6,000 made. It is on display in the museum’s Great Hall.

City workers Zachary Smith and D’Jermaine Layne remove graffiti from a building in the 2900 block of West Broad Street that a city official described as an “eyesore in the middle of the city.” Mr. Smith and Mr. Layne are part of a Richmond Department of Public Works crew that focuses on eliminating unwanted scribbles, initials and messages spraypainted in public spaces and on public and privately owned buildings. The department currently deploys two teams of six people and is now assembling a third team to expand the effort, according to Bobby Vincent, director of the Department of Public Works. Mayor Levar M. Stoney visited the project Monday to spotlight the department’s efforts to remove graffiti and to show that the city is committed to this seemingly never-ending effort to keep buildings spruced up. Mr. Vincent reported that the crews already have removed graffiti from 1,000 locations since July 1, double the number from the same period in 2020-21. His hope is that the dedicated crews can deal with at least 1,500 locations by June 30 and do even more locations next year. In addition, the department is contacting building owners to get them involved in this ongoing initiative. “We want to be able to clean up,” he said, but he also noted that owners need to take responsibility for tackling the problem as well.

Members of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus offer details Wednesday on their legislative priorities for the 2022 session of the General Assembly just hours before the session’s noon start. Among the priorities: Fully funding public education; ending solitary confinement; preventing evictions; universal paid family and medical leave; strengthening employment discrimination and harassment laws; equity in renewable energy development; and protecting recent progress, including the new Voting Rights Act of Virginia, the repeal of the death penalty, the increase in the state’s minimum wage and legalization of marijuana. The 150-pound sculpture was unveiled at the Decatur Street church on Monday, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, during a ceremony viewed online by more than 200 people. Ms. Lowry donated the piece to the church after attending the socially distanced kickoff last September of First Baptist’s yearlong 200th anniversary celebration. She said the church seemed like the perfect home for the sculpture. “It is recognition of the work you do every day to promote peace in our country,” she said during Monday’s event. “Martin Luther King knew what would be necessary — faith, hopefulness, truth-telling, courage, resilience, kindness and forgiveness. And that is what you are doing and being in the struggle for equality and peace. It is an extremely tall order.” Members of the congregation will be able to see the artwork once the church reopens for in-person worship service. The church has held virtual services because of the pandemic.

City Hall is being proactive in pushing safe practices during the pandemic. This sign was prominently displayed outside the second floor City Council Chambers on Monday before the nine council members were sworn in — including seven women, the most ever. Only a few people, mostly media and some family members, were allowed in the chamber for the ceremony. Others were able to connect to online channels to see the public ceremony.
