The S.T.A.R. mall, as it is now call, was built on the campus in 1962 as a chronic infirmary. It was repurposed in the late 1990s as a treatment and services space. In addition to hosting mental health treatment groups, the building contains a lab set up like a small apartment where patients learn skills to live independently. It also contains a library, beauty shop, canteen and clothing shop.

Jasmine Howell and her son, Aiden Howell, 4, relax and listen to speakers after participating in the Unity Walk through the Museum District last Friday to commemorate the 57th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Speakers at the event, organized by Coming to the Table, recited excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech that was delivered at the 1963 march. The walk also marked the 65th anniversary of the lynching of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was brutally murdered in Money, Miss., in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. His lynching, and a photo of his disfigured body lying in a casket that was published by JET magazine, drew widespread public attention to the brutality Black people faced, particularly in the South, and helped mobilize the Civil Rights Movement.

Work is underway on the $1.2 million renovation of Virginia Union University’s renamed Wil- lie Lanier Field at Hovey Stadium. Mr. Lanier, a former All-Star and Pro Bowl player with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1967 to 1977, played on Hovey Field when he was a student nearly 60 years ago at Richmond’s Maggie L. Walker High School next door. He has played a vital role in the project to resurface the field from grass to FieldTurf. When the VUU Panthers football team kicks off its 2020 season home opener on Oct. 3 against Shaw University, the new field will be a point of pride for the team and will put VUU on the same level as universities around the nation, officials stated. “That field shows something,” Mr. Lanier stated. “It shows the ability of what it is to provide for those young individuals who can take confidence and pride in where they play and how they are able to perform.” Squares of the old grass field, which has been in place since 1907, are being sold online to help fund the project. Ashley Williams, with her dog, Sebastian, a pit bull-spaniel mix, on the front porch of her East End home, is happy to stay in during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her family, she says, has experienced health scares in recent weeks, both related and unrelated to the coronavirus. “I have always valued family and friends, yet the communication with loved ones is even more cherished than before,” said the founder of BareSOUL Yoga. The experience also has shifted how she connects with people and the community — through online offerings and resources. The silver lining? “I am able to appreciate, explore and enjoy my home.”

The youngster wants to play football like his uncle, a junior at VUU. The coaching and workout sessions also keep Mr. Mack in shape until the Panthers practice again in August, according to Mr. Mack. Nitika and Joshua Achalam may be staying home, but they are staying busy. They are outside their home in Fulton with their chickens, Octavia Butler and Zora Neale Hurston. Asked how their lives are different during the pandemic, Mrs. Achalam, executive director of Project Yoga Richmond and an herbal healer with True Grit Botanica, said, “We’ve launched an online membership platform where the community can remotely access yoga and mindfulness content from PYR ambassadors.” Mr. Achalam, a reggae artist and educator, said, “Shows are postponed. But we’ll regroup and spend more time in the studio.” On April 4, he performed in “Couchella,” a digital music festival that helped raise money for the Makindu Children’s Center in Kenya. The money will help install hand-washing stations at the center to combat the spread of COVID-19. Asked about the silver lining, both say the crisis has caused them to slow down and concentrate on the health and well-being of themselves and family.

Antoinette Rogers is staying put at her North Side home with her 161⁄2-year-old Maltese mix dog, Toby. She takes him out for walks and fresh air. The adjunct education professor at the University of Richmond teaches one weekly online class now from the comfort of home. “I know I thrive in a face-to-face setting,” she said, while admitting that online teaching “takes a little more effort.” The pandemic, she said, has brought a pause to most everyone’s life. The silver lining? “I think God gave us some time to step back, assess some things and take stock of our lives.”

Last Sunday hundreds of women and their supporters, including First Lady Pam Northam, center, celebrate Virginia being the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The event, Celebrate! 38, included a rally, speakers and a march from Monroe Park to the State Capitol on March 8, International Women’s Day. Thanks to a Democratic majority in the General Assembly for the first time in more than two decades, the ERA was approved in January. Thirty-eight states are needed to ratify any amendment to the U.S. Constitution. But the ERA’s future is uncertain, in part, because the 1982 deadline for ratification enacted by Congress was not met. Attorneys general from Virginia and other states have filed a lawsuit arguing that the deadline was not binding and seek to force federal officials to adopt the measure that would guarantee women equal rights under the law. Speakers at last Sunday’s rally included Kate Kelly, a human rights attorney at Equality Now; Kamala Lopez, founder and co-director of Equal Means Equal; Liza Mickens, the great-great-granddaughter of the renowned banker and women’s empowerment advocate Maggie L. Walker; and Andrea Miller, executive director of the Poor People’s Campaign of Virginia.
