According to the regional Girl Scouts organization, the cookie program teaches youth members key life skills as they raise money to support the operation and programming that serves 12,000 children and teens in 36 cities and counties. “When you buy cookies, you are helping to power beneficial experiences for girls and build the next generation of female entrepreneurs,” stated Molly T. Raynell Reid shows off a tribute plaque to her late uncle, Richmond Fire Capt. Harvey S. Hicks II, during a ceremony last Sunday at Mosby Memorial Baptist Church. The ceremony marked the 70th anniversary of the hiring of the first 10 black firefighters in Richmond and Virginia. Capt. Hicks died June 4, 1963, attempting the daring rescue of a city resident who was trapped in a 23-foot-deep pit. The church joined with Engine Company No. 9 and Associates, a nonprofit group that works to call attention to the city’s pioneering black firefighters and police officers, on the Black History Month program. Richmond hired the first black police officers in 1946 and the first black firefighters in 1950. At the time of his death, Capt. Hicks also was studying for the ministry and was to preach his trial sermon a few days later. As part of Sunday’s commemoration, Dr. Price L. Davis, pastor of the church at 2901 Mechanicsville Turnpike, preached the sermon that the firefighter had written.

Ayla Hyndman, 6 months, is giving Soul Santa a close examination as if to determine if she can tell him all of her Christmas wishes. This is the first Christmas for Ayla, who visited Soul Santa, aka Floyd Brown, recently with her parents at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. Soul Santa has become an annual tradition at the museum in Jackson Ward.

Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, standing, and her 6-year-old grand-daughter Storie Znassi deliver fruit baskets and body lotion to residents of the Darby House senior apartment community in Henrico County last Friday for “I Am My Brother and Sister’s Keeper Day.” The special statewide designation for the day after Thanksgiving was approved by the General Assembly in 2018 by a resolution introduced by Delegate McQuinn. It asks Virginians to perform a random act of kindness on the Friday after the holiday. On this second annual “I Am My Brother and Sister’s Keeper Day,” Delegate McQuinn challenged people to have seven others join in doing something kind to make a difference in the lives of others. She and her granddaughter visit here with, from left, Ethel Davis, 81, Doris Laidler, 71, and Mary Berryman, 88. Other participants out doing kind acts for others on the special day included members of Delegate McQuinn’s legislative staff and members of the Richmond police and fire departments.

Mr. Baldwin came to rally support for Ms. Pohl, who is seeking to upset Republican incumbent Sen. Amanda Chase in the 11th Senate District. Along with the visit to the Richmond suburb, Mr. Baldwin also made campaign stops for candidates in Fredericksburg and Fairfax County. His one-day electioneering trip to Virginia was organized by People for the American Way, which has endorsed the Democratic candidates.

At 100, every day is a celebration, but it’s even better when the community recognizes your longevity. Eleven Richmonders were honored Sept. 21 at the 7th Annual Mayor’s Centenarian Celebration to publicly recognize city residents who turned 100 or older during 2019.
