A huge mural across the top of The Diamond honors the Richmond 34, the Virginia Union University students who were arrested in February 1960 during a lunch counter sit-in protesting the whites-only service at Thalhimers department store in Downtown. The mural, painted by Andre Shank, is one of several initiatives the Richmond Flying Squirrels is undertaking to honor the former students and their history.

Isaiah “Prince Trombone” Robinson serenades passing motorists as fellow musician, Robert Johnson III, accompanies him on an electric drum outside The National in the 700 block of East Broad Street. The venue currently is closed because of the coronavirus. The two 23- year-old musicians began their impromptu concerts after they were laid off from their full-time gigs. Their goal: To deliver some upbeat sounds to counter the pandemic’s gloom and to possibly earn some spare change from the few pedestrians in Downtown. Other in Richmond musicians have been sharing their talents on their porches or in parks. One example is saxophonist James “Plunky” Branch, who regularly turns his porch into a solo concert platform for those within earshot in his West End neighborhood.

Antoinette Rogers is staying put at her North Side home with her 161⁄2-year-old Maltese mix dog, Toby. She takes him out for walks and fresh air. The adjunct education professor at the University of Richmond teaches one weekly online class now from the comfort of home. “I know I thrive in a face-to-face setting,” she said, while admitting that online teaching “takes a little more effort.” The pandemic, she said, has brought a pause to most everyone’s life. The silver lining? “I think God gave us some time to step back, assess some things and take stock of our lives.”

Signs of spring abound, from robins to daffodils to baseball. Here, Nutzy, the mascot of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, climbs the steps of The Diamond baseball stadium to kick off the team’s first event of its 11th season — a block party last Saturday at the stadium on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. Nutzy’s Block Party included live music, dancing, local vendors and ballpark tours. It was the first opportunity for fans to buy game tickets before the season home opener on Thursday, April 16, against the Bowie Baysox of Maryland. The Richmond Flying Squirrels are the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

A giant symbol of the times now adorns the facade of the Science Museum of Virginia as it prepares to reopen to the public 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. The museum, at 2500 W. Broad St. near Downtown, has been closed to visitors for months because of the pandemic. The giant mask is a reminder that visitors will need to wear one to get in. The museum is one of many cultural spaces that are putting new requirements in place in moving from virtual events to actually welcoming visitors. In addition to the mask requirement, the museum will have visitors buy timed admission tickets in advance. It also will limit the number of people entering during operating hours. The museum currently is hosting the state Senate during the General Assembly’s special session.

On Tuesday, Richmonders commemorated the 55th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where the speech was delivered, during a program at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in the East End. City Hall is being proactive in pushing safe practices during the pandemic. This sign was prominently displayed outside the second floor City Council Chambers on Monday before the nine council members were sworn in — including seven women, the most ever. Only a few people, mostly media and some family members, were allowed in the chamber for the ceremony. Others were able to connect to online channels to see the public ceremony.

A ceremonial mechanical excavator is on site for the groundbreaking at the CoStar Group’s campus in Downtown Richmond in front of the current CoStar headquarters building at 5th and Tredegar streets. CoStar, founded in 1987, provides commercial real estate information, analytics, and online marketplaces for real estate transactions. Virginia Union University running back, Andre Mack, 23, works out with his 5-year-old nephew, Ka’Reem Moore, on Tuesday in the 700 block of 30th Street in Church Hill. The youngster wants to play football like his uncle, a junior at VUU. The coaching and workout sessions also keep Mr. Mack in shape until the Panthers practice again in August, according to Mr. Mack. Until then, Mr. Mack is finishing his college courses online and having Zoom meetings with his teammates.
